Frequently Asked Questions About HGV Training
How much does HGV Training Cost?
The cost depends on the licence category you want, the amount of training required, and whether you need your Medical, Theory Tests and Driver CPC included. At Kim Driver Training, all of our course prices are clearly displayed on our website, so there are no hidden costs or surprise extras.
Can I go straight to Class 1 (Category C+E)?
Yes! Since the licence rules changed, you can now go directly from a car licence to a Category C+E (Class 1) licence without passing Category C first. Once you pass, you’ll also receive your Category C and C1 entitlements.
What happens if I fail my HGV test?
Don’t panic! Many people pass first time, but if you don’t, we’ll explain exactly what went wrong, help you prepare for your retest and get you back on the road as quickly as possible. We also offer VIP Pass Protection for added peace of mind.
How long does Driver CPC take?
For new professional HGV drivers, you’ll usually need to complete Module 2 (Case Studies) and Module 4 (Practical Demonstration Test). Module 4 normally takes around 20–30 minutes to complete on test day, while Periodic Driver CPC requires 35 hours of approved training every five years once qualified.
How long does it take to become an HGV driver?
Everyone is different, but most people complete the whole process within a few weeks to a few months depending on DVLA processing, theory test availability and practical test dates.
What age do I have to be?
You can apply for an HGV licence from the age of 18, provided you meet the DVLA medical requirements.
Do I need a medical?
Yes. Before applying for your provisional HGV entitlement you’ll need a D4 HGV medical examination completed by a qualified doctor.
What theory tests do I need?
Most new HGV drivers need:
Multiple Choice Theory Test
Hazard Perception Test
Driver CPC Module 2 Case Study (if driving professionally)
Do you offer monthly payments?
We don’t currently offer monthly payment plans. To secure your booking, we ask for a £500 deposit, with the remaining balance payable at least 2 weeks before your practical training begins. This allows us to reserve your training dates, vehicle and instructor.
Which licence should I choose – Class 1 or Class 2?
If you want to drive articulated lorries and maximise your job opportunities, Category C+E (Class 1) is usually the best choice. Category C (Class 2) allows you to drive rigid vehicles.
Will I get a job after I pass?
While no training provider can guarantee employment, there is still strong demand for qualified HGV drivers across the UK, and we regularly help our newly qualified drivers find work through our recruitment contacts.
How much can an HGV driver earn?
Pay varies depending on experience, location and the type of work, but qualified HGV drivers often earn between £35,000 and £60,000+ per year, with some specialist roles paying even more.
Can I train and take my HGV test in an automatic truck?
Yes. All of our HGV training vehicles are automatic.
- If you hold a full manual car licence and pass your HGV test in an automatic truck, you will receive both manual and automatic HGV entitlements.
- If you hold an automatic-only car licence and pass your HGV test in an automatic truck, your HGV entitlement will also be automatic only.
If you’re unsure which entitlement you have, our team will be happy to check before you book your training.
