Winter is here!

An arctic blast has surprised us all this week. Waking up to find it’s snowing might look magical, but it doesn’t take much snow and ice to bring our main roads to a standstill. I’m glad to see the gritters have been out when I get in my car. In the past we have visited countries that don’t bother to grit their main roads, and it’s not a great experience! Further north where the snow has really settled they have employed snow ploughs to ensure towns and villages aren’t cut off and supplies can still get through.

Winter Service Operations

If you’re also glad to see this response to the winter weather you might be wondering what qualifications you’d need to drive a gritter or snow plough. This is a specialist skill, but the place you need to start is getting a class 2 licence. These are large goods vehicles, so you’ll need at least a class 2 licence to drive them. We have a range of class 1 and 2 driving courses if you’re thinking this could be a great job – it doesn’t matter how much experience you have we can help you through the training process.

To drive these specialist vehicles you need to add to your skills with specific training in winter service operations. This could be a City & Guilds in Winter Service Operations or NPORS N802 Gritter/Snowplough training. These will ensure you understand how to use the machinery safely.
